In what else does hope lie?
Charlie S
We were prepared but nervous for the big
day. Some were more excited than others
and I think we were all wondering what
was going to happen. We all wanted to win
but unfortunately you can’t win everything.
But there is always another round, another
series, another chance at something. We
did our best and we all know it, and that’s
all that matters. There are benefits to being
involved with Opti-MINDS. It teaches you
important lessons about life. Opti-MINDS
prepares people. We did great!

Guildford Grammar Preparatory School was recently named a
SunSmart school, with a SunSmart sign and certificate presented
to Mr Wight and members of the P & F after the Preparatory
School assembly on Friday 11 October. The students also
enjoyed meeting the SunSmart mascot Sid!
To reinforce our commitment to sun protection, all
students were presented with their own bottle of GGS
sunscreen to attach to their school bag. The sunscreen
initiative was developed and funded by the P & F Society.
As a SunSmart school, we are now registered with Cancer
Council WA as meeting the following criteria to reduce exposure
to UV radiation:
1. Most or all students wear sun protective hats (not peaked
caps) all year round, or when the UV Index is 3 and above.
Students without hats are required to stay out of direct sunlight
2. Sunscreen is available throughout the school and its use
encouraged
3. Outdoor events are rescheduled to avoid peak UV times when
possible
4. Sun protection is encouraged through teacher and parent
role modelling and classroom activities
5. The school uniform includes sun protective items
6. The school has a sun protection policy that meets Cancer
Council WA criteria
Cancer Council WA’s SunSmart Schools Programs Coordinator, Sally Blane, congratulated
Guildford Grammar School for the initiative.
• Belinda is not only an amazing script
writer, she can make paper cranes too “A Cancer Council survey of WA primary schools showed that only 50 per cent of schools
have sunscreen available in all classrooms, so having every child with sunscreen is a step
above that,” she said.
• Michael has great ideas but puts the
team before himself “Only six per cent of schools reported that all students had applied sunscreen before
lunch.
• And Mr Spencer was a HUGE help in so
many ways! “Using sunscreen regularly has been shown to reduce the risk of skin cancer, including the
deadliest form, melanoma, yet daily sunscreen use in Australia is below 20 per cent.”
