AROUND THE SCHOOL
a Sharp mind
Year 12 student Joshua Sharp (12St)
has been bestowed with a Headmaster’s
Commendation for his outstanding report
for Engineering Studies ATAR.
Joshua’s report details the design and
manufacture of a ‘servomechanism’ – a
device which produces motion at a higher
level of energy than the input level.
The report is well-researched, professionally
written, articulate and thorough; a
fascinating and insightful read.
Joshua is a very adept student who exhibits
a true passion for engineering, and was
motivated to construct a device that would
provide a challenge. Fascinated by Tesla’s
revolutionary Powerwall, Joshua aspired to
create his own version, using recycled laptop
batteries as an affordable and effective
solution.
The project required Joshua to individually
process and test the capacity of hundreds
of lithium-ion batteries. With a diligent
work ethic, and through his comprehensive
report, Joshua created an automated
solution to minimise the time required for
the processing of the cells.
Still intrigued by engineering, Joshua is
seeking a future in the industry and will
be undertaking a Bachelor of Engineering
(Mechatronic Engineering) and a Bachelor of
Science (Computer Science) (double degree)
in 2020.
