hanks to all of you who do so much to
support Fort Lewis College. There is no way that
this institution could enjoy the kind of success it
has without the generosity of FLC’s alumni and
friends.
We at Fort Lewis College want to take our
students into the future in the best way we can
offer. For us, that means a valuable education
in a liberal arts environment. There is a lot of
focus on the science, technology, engineering
and math fields in the country today, and Fort
Lewis College offers some of the finest programs
within these disciplines in the state. Yet we must
not devalue the arts, humanities and social
sciences in building the most effective graduates
possible. I stand with one of the great innovators of our time, the late Steve Jobs, when he said
“It’s in Apple’s DNA that technology alone is not
enough—it’s technology married with liberal
arts, married with the humanities, that yields us
the result that makes our heart sing…”
To reinforce our commitment that the combination of the arts and sciences is what lends
the liberal arts its value and strength, we have
merged the FLC School of Arts, Humanities &
Social Sciences and the FLC School of Natural &
Behavioral Sciences into the new School of Arts
and Sciences. Our goal is to bring these disciplines closer to one another so that they can rise
together, with our students reaping the benefits.
The College also recently joined institutions
like Harvard, Princeton, and Stanford as a
member of the National Humanities Alliance.
The Alliance is an organization that seeks to
support and promote the humanities nationwide through advocacy efforts on local, state
and national levels. Last, but not least, FLC is
a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts
Colleges, another national group that seeks to
increase the awareness and interest in the liberal
arts.
As I mentioned, Fort Lewis College has some of
the best science programs in the state, and we are
working to make them even better. One project
on the horizon that will be of great benefit to
our students is the construction of our new
Geosciences, Physics and Engineering (GPE)
building. Geosciences, physics and engineering
are three of our strongest and fastest growing
majors at Fort Lewis College, and now we need
to bring the quality of our facilities up to the
quality of our programs. I am hopeful that we
will soon see financial assistance from the state
to begin construction on this new building, but
we will need the help of our alumni and friends
to complete it. Stay tuned to learn how you
can join us in making the new GPE building
a reality.
