I sat many days in my college music courses questioning my decision to be a music major. I knew without a doubt that I loved music and children. I knew that having a career that included both of my passions would be a dream come true. However, being in a classroom with peers who seemed far more advanced in their study of music, left me feeling way beyond reach, played heavily on my insecurities as a music major. I had to study twice as hard as my peers. This journey was one that definitely proved that God’s grace is sufficient. He placed such supportive professors, friends, and family in the right places at the right time. He gave me understanding and continually made ways out of no way. STUDIES END, JOB HUNT BEGINS When it came time for me to job hunt, that was another obstacle in itself. Paper applications were unheard of because everything was now being done electronically. Unfortunately for me, the statewide online teacher database where jobs postings are listed never recognized my profile. Therefore I was unable to apply for the few jobs that were available. But God! Not long after a few failed attempts did a friend bring to my attention one particular job post that accepted paper applications. This was actually the first job position I was able to apply for due to the online database obstacle. INTERVIEW OF A LIFETIME After applying I received a call to come in for an interview. The good news was the interview was scheduled during my Fall break from school, however, the challenge was that my interview was scheduled immediately following my arrival back from a choir tour out of state. I would literally be getting off the bus and heading to my interview. Fortunately my interview was the very last one scheduled, giving me time for travel and reflection. I later found out that thirty applications were accepted and 10 applicants were chosen to come in for an interview. Now I have gone to several seminars in which they suggest the best tips to nail an interview. These tips cover everything from what to wear to what questions to ask your interviewer. My take on the interview process was a bit unconventional. I wore a bright bold blue sweater with a matching flower in my hair. My nervous energy was more beneficial, and I was surprisingly more laid back than 23
