“ In 1962 the Students ’ Union was a large Nissen Hut . The weekly “ hop ” - a desperate affair for the men as the ratio was 3 men to 1 woman - was mostly enormously noisy rock and roll . But every night was brought to a halt - and I can hear it now - by the disc jockey playing the Ray Charles track - “ Hit the road Jack and don ’ t you come back no more no more , hit the road Jack and don ’ t you come back no more ”. “ Fond memories of White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane . The jukebox in the Union bar seemed to stick on that one so it played endlessly throughout my 4 years at Keele . Every time I hear it now , which isn ’ t often , it transports me back to Keele .”
“ Magma . They played as a storm raged outside the Student Union . During the full-blooded climax to the Kohntark suite an explosion of thunder and lightning cut all power . It was an elemental moment . 27 Feb 1974 .”

“ Royal Ball 1967 , Keele Students ’ Union . Princess Margaret CBE and Lord Snowden in attendance as was Cream . They came on early , about midnight , and opened with N . S . U . from their first album Fresh Cream , 1966 . The track still sends tingles up my spine and transports me back to within touching distance of one of the greatest bands ever .”
