Forever Keele eZine Winter 2020-21 | Page 13

Forever Keele 13 sound better on the whole as well as providing different timbre too .
Keyboard
The keyboard was bought with the intention for it to be used in a variety of locations , so we are not restricted to locations with a piano . However , since music societies are not running as normal this semester , we are in the process of loaning it to a student who has previously learnt piano and wants to continue to play , but with the Clock House off limits to non-music students this was her only method of continuing to learn .
KUMU typically go on a tour every summer and to have a keyboard is great as there is a wider range of pieces they can perform , and the musicians as a whole sound fuller .
Violin
Year on year violinists have been declining , so we bought the violin to try and encourage players who may or may not have tried it before , to give it a go ! This is to increase the quality of the sound to get a fuller sound in the orchestras .
Although the instruments are currently not being used to their full potential , we sincerely hope that this will happen in the future when restrictions are reduced . We would like to thank alumni once again for giving the musicians of Keele a chance to evolve .

Telethon 2020 update

Wonderful alumni like you pledged an incredible £ 145,660 during our recent telethon !
Once again , we have been overwhelmed by the generosity of our Keele alumni . The positive response from supporters like you , gives us confidence as we go forward in these unprecedented times .
It is through the generosity of our alumni that we can continue to support all students , whatever their financial or welfare needs and as demonstrated by the total raised , the impact of many people giving together can be truly transformational !
Although welfare , support and hardship grants have long been a part of Keele ’ s offering to its student community , never has the University ’ s Hardship Fund seen such a demand for help .
Due directly to the impact of COVID-19 , many of our students have suddenly found themselves struggling to make ends meet , having perhaps lost jobs during both term-time and over the summer , or they have families that are now under increased pressure financially due to redundancy or lockdown restrictions .
So far , grants from this emergency fund have been hugely appreciated and have helped to ease anxiety and stress amongst our student community , alleviating some of the desperate financial situations in which they have found themselves .
More details on the Hardship Fund and how to support our current students can be found here .
