Keele news
A lot has certainly happened since our Winter edition of Forever Keele. Here is a
roundup of some news and developments at Keele since our last edition:
Keele’s School of Nursing and
Midwifery celebrates 25th
anniversary
This year Keele University’s School of
Nursing and Midwifery marks its 25th
anniversary.
Keele University, which turned 70 last
year, formed the School of Nursing and
Midwifery in 1995, and over the last
25 years the school has transformed
its educational delivery providing a
diverse, vibrant and dynamic space for
learning.
Keele was the first new University of
the 20th Century and was created to
meet the demands of a new kind of
society, economy and world. Carrying
on that ethos, in August 1995 the
University merged with the North
Staffordshire College of Nursing and
Midwifery to create the new School.
In 2004 the School of Nursing and
Midwifery moved into the Clinical
Education Centre within the University
Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust,
a purpose built resource that houses
state of the art teaching facilities
including nine skills laboratories
expanding to 13 labs this year, used
to enhance and support the student
learning experience.
The school was ranked 6th in the
UK in the Guardian University Guide
2020, and also ranked No.1 in the UK
for student satisfaction with course,
with an impressive score of 98%, and
received 97% for student satisfaction
with teaching.
The school is especially proud that
during its 25th year its students have
been at the forefront of helping the
NHS and the community during the
Covid-19 pandemic. The School of
Nursing and Midwifery has supported
over 120 students to help the NHS
through the current outbreak by
undertaking an extended placement
in line with Health Education England
guidance.
Professor Patricia Owen, Head of
School of Nursing and Midwifery,
said: “I am thrilled to celebrate the
school’s 25th anniversary this year,
and recognise all the excellent work
every team does within the school. We
are at the forefront of ensuring that our
nursing and midwifery students are
ready to practice by providing them
with learning enhanced clinical and
leadership skills. Having 25 years of
experience of high-quality teaching
and research underpins the excellent
reputation of the school, its students
and alumni.”
