Forever Keele 21 Spotlight on research at Keele In this edition of Forever Keele, we shine a light on the work of Keele’s Institute for Science & Technology in Medicine The Institute for Science & Technology in Medicine (ISTM) bridges the interface between new advances in science and technology with medicine and clinical practice. It successfully integrates Keele University’s biomedical research strengths across the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences. The Institute brings together biological scientists, physicists, chemists, engineers, mathematicians and clinicians in a single unit, under three scientific themes: • Healthcare Technologies • Regenerative Medicine • Therapeutics. ISTM aims to improve the health of patients by applying knowledge gained from science to develop insights into the causes of disease and ways of treating them. This ‘bench to bedside’ approach brings together scientists and NHS clinicians from a range of backgrounds and specialties, in a high quality research environment with access to the latest facilities. For example, Professor Josep Sule-Suso, Associate Specialist and Professor in Oncology, combines his clinical duties at University Hospitals of North Midlands’ Cancer Centre with his research at Keele within the Cancer Group of the Therapeutics Team within ISTM. The broad goal of the therapeutics theme is to conduct basic and translational research into human disease that will ultimately lead to new therapies. The Institute’s research investigates several areas where there is a need for improved medical care or there are emerging medical technologies that can be applied to different diseases. The Cancer Group seeks to develop novel therapies and biomarkers for cancer treatment and diagnosis and the translation of radiotherapy and drug therapy into clinical use.
