Fordham Prep Celebrates Diversity at Annual Ricci Night On Saturday, January 25, the Fordham Prep community came together for its annual Ricci Night. The night, organized by the school’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee, is a celebration of the diversity of the Prep community. The evening is named after Jesuit, Fr. Matteo Ricci, SJ, a pioneer of cultural exchanges. Ricci immersed himself in and displayed profound respect for the diversity of cultures, promoted mutual understanding, and was a master of building relationships between cultures. Through food, music, and dance, the Fordham Prep community gathered to celebrate its vast diversity. During the evening’s festivities, the school honored two of its faculty with the Wanda Piñeiro Diversity Award. Mr. George Febles P ’22, Social Studies teacher and head of the school’s Cross Country and Track and Field programs, and Dr. Craig Smith, Religious Studies teacher and Head Tennis Coach, were this year’s recipients. Both have worked tirelessly both inside and outside the classroom to ensure that Fordham Prep remains a community that both welcomes and celebrates its diversity. Senior Brendan Hamilton ’20 was also presented with the Matteo Ricci Award to recognize his commitment to cultural diversity at the Prep and his contributions on the Global Education trip to Xela, Guatemala last year. In a spectacular show of generosity, school spirit and commitment to community, Fordham Prep and six other Jesuit high schools concluded a friendly, but spirited holiday food drive competition, collecting 137,632 pounds of food that filled local food banks and pantries with much-needed provisions during the critical Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons. Launched in early November, the Great Ignatian Challenge, included Fairfield Prep (Fairfield, CT), Loyola School, Regis High School, Saint Joseph’s Preparatory School (Philadelphia, PA); Saint Peter’s Prep, and Xavier High School. The Great Ignatian Challenge was created by Jim Rowen ’82 in 2016 to put a spotlight on hunger in our communities. Inspired by the students’ collective commitment to social justice, Rowen has also contributed more than $1.1 M to support scholarship funds for needy students at each institution. Rowen’s donations, including $350,000 this year, are divided among the schools based on the amount of food collected per student. He said, “St. Ignatius taught us that love speaks louder in deeds more than words. The students at these seven Jesuit schools embody Ignatian principles and beliefs. I am inspired by their commitment to be men for others.” E VE NTS AND RE CAP Faculty Honored at Annual Convocation On Saturday, October 19, the Fordham Prep faculty and staff celebrated their annual Convocation, to honor long-serving members and welcome new ones to their ranks.
