is granted an amendment to its original
charter by New York State, reaffirming
its status as a university and officially
changing its name to Fordham University.
As for Second Division, the Prep legally
becomes St. John’s College High School.
71) February 17, 1908: The St. John’s
Second Division Walking Club makes its
first excursion to Van Cortlandt Park. The
club exists in 2017 under the moderator
Mr. Paul Homer as the New York City
Explorers Club, which travels out several
times a year, mainly on foot, to see the
sights of the Bronx and the other
boroughs.

by John Mulcahy, international rowing
legend and gold and silver medalist in the
1904 Olympics, Prep Class of 1891.
73) March 1910: The football team
presents a watch to Coach Jack Coffey as
a token of their appreciation for a very
successful season. Coach Coffey is
himself a Fordham student at the time,
soon to graduate with the College Class
of 1910. After a career in professional
baseball, Coffey would return as a coach
