The 1954 Thanksgiving Day Game by michael Campbell’ 55
As i look back on the 1954 prep’ s Thanksgiving Day game against our archrival Xavier, i remember that day vividly more than 60 years later. The prep had been undefeated and untied up until that day. The final game of the season was especially important to our team. We had some excellent players who received recognition for their accomplishments, including end Frank Costello’ 55 who was named All Catholic All American, All Scholastic, All met and was the leading nYC Catholic Schools pass receiver. Then there was fullback Tom Brennan’ 56 who was All Scholastic, All met and the nYC Catholic League’ s leading scorer. Other honors went to guard Bob rybicki’ 55 who was All Scholastic and All met. Tackle mike Siano’ 55 was All Catholic and All met. Quarterback Dick Cea’ 55 was All met and All Scholastic. Walter“ Buzzy” morris’ 56 was All Scholastic
and All met. Quarterback Tony Fiorella’ 56 was selected for the All Scholastic team. We definitely had a formidable team, which included other fine players namely Bob“ The rabbit” Oswald’ 57, ed Ariniello’ 55, gerry Carroll’ 55 and Dick Timothy’ 57.
it rained the night before the Thanksgiving Classic in 1954 making Jack Coffey Field muddy, so our beloved and astute coach Joe“ Sammy” Ososki provided us with extra-long spikes for better traction. These definitely helped us. The New York Times reported that there were 8,600 people in the stands, one of the largest crowds to attend the Turkey Day game.
We started off fast, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter. in the second quarter, Xavier came back when Cadet mcgee scored a touch down after pilfering the ball from Cea who was attempting to throw a pass. in the third quarter, Xavier tied the game as Cadet Faletti sped 49 yards for a score that tied the game. With only 5 minutes remaining, Cea threw a pass to Brennan for the go ahead touchdown. We won the game by the final score of 18 – 12 and made history by finishing the season undefeated and untied. An accomplishment that still stands to this day! The crowd also celebrated by tearing down the goal posts!
it was an unforgettable day and season!
