“ These subjects have prepared me for my future in engineering .”
He is also involved in a number of extracurricular activities at Fordham Prep : president of the Diversity Alliance , vice president of the Kawaida Club , a member of the Social Justice Committee , the Engineering Club and the Prep ’ s Dramatic Society . Outside of school , he is the founder and co-president of The Justice Experiment . He is on the executive committee for the Diversity Awareness Initiative for Students and assisted Smith College ' s Black Students Alliance for the past three years . As if that isn ’ t enough , he also has a job at Seasoned Vegan .
Roody heard about Posse last year from his friends but didn ' t actively pursue the opportunity until he was nominated by the Prep ’ s Counseling Department . “ The
application process was very strenuous . It featured multiple group interviews and was very intense . You could feel the competition in the room , especially in the final round . With only ten spots left , and twenty contestants , everybody was competing for a spot . It was like a game of musical chairs , except half would get eliminated .”
When asked how he decided on Middlebury , Roody says , “ During the second-round interview , I had to choose my top five colleges and Middlebury was my third choice . I am very familiar with liberal arts colleges and the education they provide . My sister went to Smith College and loved it . And after doing research myself , I realized that I wanted an experience like that .”
As for his Fordham Prep experience , Roody replies , “ Fordham Prep has had an interesting impact on me . It has awakened my understanding of who I am .”
National Student Walkout At 10 am on Wednesday , March 14 , several hundred Prep students joined with hundreds more from the Academy of Mount St . Ursula and participated in a 17-minute walkout . The protest was intended to to promote school safety and remember the lives lost at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland , Florida .
Following a 17-minute march from Bedford Park Boulevard to the Rowan Athletic Field at the Prep , several students from both schools led a prayer service that included listing the names of the deceased , praying for peace and imploring political leaders to action .
The march underscored part of the school ’ s mission , a
“ commitment to promote justice .” In fact , Arthur Mabaka ’ 18 , one of the student leaders of the event , reflected on what the event meant , “ We wanted to show our empathy for what happened in Parkland and to connect as much as we can with those going on the walkouts today around the nation .” He lauded the Prep staff , saying , “ To come out as a school with the administration supporting us says a lot about the Prep as an institution .” He added , “ It ’ s great , but we have to decide what the next step will be .”
Fordham Prep students are encouraged to think for themselves and form their own opinions . The school ’ s mission charges them to reflect , question , learn , pray , love , serve and lead in every aspect of their lives .
