Jack Foley and
Stanley O’Konsky, SJ
In the 1991 publication, When September Comes, former Prep
teacher Frank Holbrook ’45 and former Prep librarian and
historian Gus Stellwag ’49 describe the era of Pat Shea, Jim
Melican, Edward Dunne, Harry McDonough, Al Kirchner ’26, John
Lyttle ’26 and Rudy Hanish as the “golden age” of Fordham Prep
teachers. Others feel the golden age of Fordham Prep teachers
was in the 1940s and 50s with the additions of Holbrook, Chuck
DaParma, Jack Leonard, SJ and Edmund McHugh ’39. Still others
feel the golden age was during the 1970s.
But, when it comes to defining a golden age or determining
which teachers belong, there are two teachers who certainly
belong in the discussion: John “Jack” Foley ’63 and Fr. Stanley
O’ Konsky, SJ.
Both men have taught at Fordham Prep for over fifty years,
joining a select club. Fr. O’Konsky arrived as a Jesuit scholastic
in 1966 in the English Department, and Jack Foley joined the
Classical Languages Department following his graduation from
Fordham University in 1967.
