Students working in a cozy corner of the library. Prep group in Dublin. the early Jesuit missionaries would be proud of the far-reaching travel and dedicated service of our students! With so much to be grateful for in this new academic year, I am inspired by the work of our generous faculty and staff, especially in my early visits to classes. The excellence of teaching and learning shines forth in AP classes, science labs, discussion of literature, musical practice and artistic creativity. We will also reflect in earnest on what our curriculum at Fordham Prep ought to look like in this day and age, beginning a thorough curriculum review. How do we distinguish Fordham Prep with a forward-thinking vision for 21st century teaching and learning, while honoring our successful Ignatian tradition and the goals of Jesuit education? How can curriculum serve as a vehicle to realize our values, vision and direction? Visiting Danish students and staff on the steps of Hughes Hall. Our mission at the Prep is “to inspire young men to reflect, to question, to learn, to pray, to love, to serve and to lead.” In the 21st century, this mission is deeply rooted in the global network of Jesuit schools, and with each year our international experiences continue to grow with tremendous possibility. During October, we once again welcomed exchange students and faculty from Saint Ignatius’ College, Riverview in Sydney, Australia. We also hosted a group of 34 students and faculty from Niels Steensens Gymnasium in Copenhagen, Denmark for a day-long visit to the Bronx. For a second year, we again sent a group on exchange to Dublin, Ireland with Clongowes Wood College. Other global education adventures will invite Rams to Guatemala, Italy, Rwanda and Thailand. St. Ignatius Loyola and This moment in our history is an opportunity for reflection and renewal, sustained by the foundation of our tradition and open to new horizons that will explore how the young men of Fordham can excel and serve with love and conscious virtue, amor et conscia virtus. As a parting word, please know of my sincere gratitude to all in the Prep family who support and sustain our mission with time, talent and treasure. My thanks to all of our alumni, benefactors and friends who have donated in the past year. Your generosity helps to advance our mission in so many ways, as it comes alive in the work of students, faculty and staff each and every day. May all of us in the Prep community sustain one another in prayer, and may our 177th year on the Rose Hill Campus be another one filled with God’s grace and many good things. AMDG! Vol. 2 2018-19 | 7
