Air Force Protection - Ground Close Combat Role
Our adversaries will seek to disrupt air operations both on ground and in the air . Defending RAF assets is the responsibility of the RAF Regiment which delivers unique specialist combat skills to protect aircraft and bases .
Field Squadrons : RAF Regiment Field Squadrons are trained in a range of specialised close combat skills and tactics which they are able to employ around essential aircraft operating areas . Utilising a variety of weapon systems and sensors , squadrons can provide rapid Force Protection and work alongside Light Armoured Squadrons .
Light Armoured Squadrons : RAF Regiment Light Armoured Squadrons , operate a range of protected vehicles , such as the FOXHOUND and PANTHER , to enable rapid deployment of RAF Regiment personnel to defend air operations within the CAGE .
Joint Terminal Attack Controllers ( JTACs )
RAF Regiment JTACs are highly trained specialists who provide a vital link between air and ground forces and are trained to call in air and fire support from jets , helicopter gunships , artillery and unmanned aerial systems . Their primary role is Forward Air Controlling , communicating with attack aircraft or fire support cells . RAF Regiment JTACs belong to the Air Land Integration ( ALI ) Cell , who support RAF / RAF Regiment operations . RAF Regiment JTACs are also embedded with Army Units , the Royal Marines and the Joint Fires Cell within Support Company , Special Forces Support Group ( SFSG ). RAF Regiment personnel selected to support Special Forces or airborne units will undertake parachuting training .
