BADLY NEEDED REPAIRS
26 Schools Wakhan Corridor, Afghanistan
$ 100,000 needed
“ In 2004, when CAI first began working in Afghanistan, we targeted the most remote, inaccessible, underserved region— the Wakhan Corridor,” Mortenson said.“ We wanted to go into one area and really make a difference. We started at the end of the road, in Sarhad-e-Broghil, where we finished the first school in 2006. Since then we have responded to requests from 25 other communities to help them establish schools.”
These projects— along with CAI’ s ongoing support for students and teachers, maternal healthcare workers, and six women’ s vocational centers— represent an estimated $ 3 million investment in the Wakhan.
Now CAI is working hand-in-hand with the Afghan government and our Afghan nonprofit partner Star of Knowledge to upgrade and support the schools in this particularly remote region. Other NGOs are leaving the region, but we are committed to supporting these communities and, in the longer term, to helping locals form their own NGO to insure the projects are well managed and sustained for generations to come, Thaden said.
The repairs and improvements include:
 Toilets for two schools, Sanglich and Potokh primary schools.
 Boundary walls for Sarhad / Sitara and Khuspak higher secondary schools, and Sanglich, Potokh and Pikui primary schools.
 Toilet repairs at Kali Panj Higher Secondary School.
“ In the Wakhan we were really able to see the effect of going into one area, really working with all communities, and seeing this huge uplift,” Mortenson said.“ Now there is this shining beacon, this ray of hope coming from this remote, inaccessible area. If you can do it there, you can do it anywhere.” n
