T
he newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images
of America series is Around Walnut Cove and Danbury by
local author Kyle A. Berrier. The book boasts more than 200
vintage images of these North Carolina towns.
This new pictorial history chronicles Walnut Cove and Danbury,
which are situated on the Dan River in northern North Carolina. The
book takes readers from the formation of both towns, sharing stories
of how Walnut Cove’s first settler arrived in 1750 and the town’s
official incorporation in 1889. Images show scenes of everyday life
in the area and highlight how Walnut Cove grew into an industrious
town that featured a gristmill, a blacksmith shop and a branch of the
R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.
The book also focuses on the history of Danbury, located 10 miles
northwest of Walnut Cove. Danbury was chosen as the county seat
when the county was divided in 1849. Readers will learn that while
no official Civil War battles occurred in the town, Danbury
supported the Confederate army by operating the Moratock Iron
Furnace, which is preserved today as Moratock Park. In Around
Walnut Cove and Danbury, author Kyle A Berrier showcases the
rich industrial and community history of these notable North
Carolina Piedmont towns and preserves their history for
generations to come.
