Besides youth and inexperience, Greene County’s
biggest question mark lies with the special teams
as you won’t find anyone on the roster specifically
labeled as a kicker/punter.
“We’re going to try to find one out of the athletes
that we have,” said Milligan. “If we can’t find
one we’re comfortable with, we’ll just go for two
every time. We don’t want just a kicker, we want
somebody that’s going to be there every day for
us and contribute.”
The Greene County young guns are set to
square off against a new region in 2020 after
the GHSA’s regular realignment. The Tigers will
compete against Commerce, Washington-Wilkes,
Towns County, Lincoln County and Social Circle
for the Region 8-A Public crown while trying to
finish in the top four to earn a postseason berth.
The Tigers were previously with Lincoln and
Washington-Wilkes in Region 7-A, but the other
schools are new competition on the region front.
If recent years’ records are any indication, Commerce
will pose a tough challenge while Lincoln
and Washington-Wilkes are known commodities.
“It’s a football region,” Milligan said of his team’s
placement. “You’ve got Lincoln, Commerce,
[Washington-] Wilkes and you’ve got us — all
football teams that have been in the hunt for it
before. I think it’s a very good football region
that will make us all better.”
Looking at the non-region portion of the schedule,
Greene County fans will notice a couple
of Lake Oconee area matchups missing. Both
Morgan and Putnam County have been removed
from the Tigers’ slate in favor of some schools
closer in size.
“When we started playing Morgan we were pretty
close as far as enrollment goes,” Milligan said.
“They’ve almost tripled our enrollment. We’re
sitting with 400 kids [in the whole school], so
we don’t have the depth to play them. If you get
a couple kids hurt to start the year you’re in bad
shape, especially as a small Class A school.”
Greene and Morgan have scheduled a preseason
scrimmage though due to their proximity.
Despite the team’s youth and lack of a kicker, the
Tiger head coach says that’s no reason to count
them out of the postseason.
“We’d love to be in the hunt as far as making the
playoffs,” Milligan said on his goals for 2020. “I
think that’s feasible for us to do. We want our
kids to compete, grow and develop. We’re going
to stay on them in the weight room. We know
we’re young, so we know that will pay off in a
couple years for us. We just want to compete and
get better each week.”
Greene County’s 2020 campaign kicks off at
home Sept. 4 against Westside of Augusta. The
region schedule begins in October at Commerce.
