The Role
“At the most basic facet, my role
boils down to the results we get every
Saturday. The most rewarding aspect is
gaining three points especially if this is
coupled with a good performance and
a clean sheet. Of course, on the other
hand, losing a game at the weekend can
be possibly not the most challenging, but
certainly the biggest source of despair.
In terms of reward or satisfaction
though, the biggest source of that is
trying to develop players and seeing
positive results from these efforts. I’ve
established strong working relationships
with a lot of the squad now, and to see
them listen, understand, then most
importantly, implement the things we
discuss and work on, is tremendously
rewarding.
When this environment is understood
and the squad is on board with the
methods, the results are then hopefully
shown in performances from the team
on Saturdays and ultimately, winning
games. I feel in the last two months,
these methods, coupled with the players

understanding and at times defining
the system and their roles within it, has
saw us find a level of consistency in our
results and performances – with again,
the desire to keep clean sheets at the
base of this. I think it’s taken time for
the players to get used to these demands
and that of the quality of opposition,
but there is certainly an element of self-
belief and unity within the squad which
of course is incredibly rewarding for
myself to look to continuously develop
too.”
Atmosphere
“The atmosphere is very good at
the moment. We are on the back of an
incredible cup win against league leaders
Penicuik where we eventually won 4-5
on penalties after a 4-4 draw after extra
time. Penicuik are a good side who play
some excellent possession based football
but we were quick and incisive on the
counter attack and after taking the lead,
we then came back to equalise three
times to take it to penalties. The players
deserve huge credit because they even
surprised me at their levels of desire to
attack and play without fear, coupled
with a refusal to get beat.
With this being my first season as a
manager, I’ve felt my primary concern
is to stamp out any complacency and
almost push the players more than ever
before, to make sure our momentum and
good form continues – at the start of the
season we were guilty of a hangover
after an excellent Scottish cup run, so it’s
up to myself and my staff to make sure
we have learned from that and to not
allow it to happen again moving into the
business end of the season.”
Youth
“We have several youth teams at
the club starting from roughly six years
old. With a limited pool of players, the
teams at each age group can be sporadic
but do look to carry on all the way to
stepping into ‘adult’ football – with the
first stage of this ladder being the clubs
amateur side. There are some very hard
working people involved in the running
of Coldstream FC Junior teams and the
