Leighton Town
FOOTBALL CLUB
Leighton Town FC is a fine example of the important role
that a club can play in their local community. Football Focus
Magazine recently caught up with Club Representative Roy
Parker to find more about the club.
He told us, “The club was founded in 1885 but changed its
name to Leighton Town in 1963. I joined the Club in 2001 when
I was asked if I would help as the Reserve Team physio. The
Club had just been relegated from the Ryman League Division
1 and in that close season the Manager resigned and the
Reserve Team manager was appointed to the First Team post.”
“Leighton has always been a friendly Club and there was a
good atmosphere in and around the Club but that first season
was difficult and the new Manager resigned in October as he
felt that he could not attract the standard of player that the
Club required. The club re-appointed former Manager, Paul
Burgess to the role. The club ended low down in the table but
had hopes for the next season but again finished outside the
promotion places.
“In 2003/2004, the Club was promoted as Champions to
the Ryman League Division 1 and reached the 5th round of
the FA Vase and was named as Ryman Division 2 Team of
the Year. The Club was transferred to the Southern League
East and finished in 10th place, not bad for a young side. In
2007/2008 we had a good FA Cup run before being knocked
out by Havant and Waterlooville who then made further
progress before eventually losing to Liverpool at Anfield.
