Being at the heart of the Community, youth football is massively important to a club like ours. It’s important that we are able to produce players from Dumfries and Galloway who are able to turn professional. For them to do that and go on and play for the club at a decent level is hugely rewarding. It’s a massive credit to every member of coaching staff who has worked with our youngsters from the age of ten all the way up to the professional game. Obviously this doesn’t come easy and as a club it is paramount we have a pathway which can make the transition from under 18 to reserve team to first team as smooth a transition as possible. This happens due to the fact that the players involved in the under 18 and reserve set up are involved and around the first team on a regular basis. We feel that if they mingle with the senior professionals from the start then it isn’t daunting for them later on as they progress. We also allow players time to develop so they may train with the first team once or twice a week before they are training with them full time, this then easing them into the first team environment. In terms of Queen of the South in the community, we are at the heart of Dumfries and Galloway. We run a successful schools programme which saw us involved with over thirty primary and secondary schools in the area last year. We also run a Why Try? Programme which involves us heading into schools to provide simple, hands-on solutions for dropout prevention, violence prevention, truancy reduction, and increased academic success. The idea is straightforward, we want to help teach social and emotional principles to youth in a way they can understand and remember. We also offer a wide range of activities at the Queen of the South Arena on a weekly basis from pre and primary school clubs, girls only clubs to Walking Football for the over 55s, so we have something for everyone and our age range is huge. We also offer school holiday soccer camps three times a year; at Easter, in the summer and October, are involved in the national football fans in training programme, the festive friend’s initiative and run a breakfast club, so we literally have something on offer for anyone who wants to be involved! Our aim for the next five years is to keep making progress and to continue to move forward both on and off the park so that our fans can enjoy a further 100 years of Queen of the South football club.
