Stamford Stamford ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL CLUB First established in 1896, Stamford AFC is based at the Borderville Sports Centre on Ryhall Road in Lincolnshire and their first team currently competes in the Evo-Stik East League. They are led by Chair David Whitby who is supported by Secretary Philip Bee and the club is looking to progress under their guidance. The club’s first ever match was played on Hanson’s Field and there is some evidence that football was played there dating back to the early 1870s. The club has gone on to put together a history of which they have every right to be proud since then. Indeed, they enjoyed plenty of success in their early years as they won the Younger Cup in their first season with notable successes coming in the Hinchingbrooke Cup in 1907 and 1908. The trophy was won in front of four figure crowds at Huntingdon. This season their first team has made a steady start to their league campaign, putting together a record of five wins, four draws and six defeats from their fifteen matches. This sees them sitting in a safe mid-table position with nineteen points on the board. This should provide them with a solid platform from which to grow as they head into 2019. As long as they are able to retain their current group of players and can perhaps make one or two quality additions they should be in with a good chance of pushing on up the league. Stamford is not a club to focus solely upon their senior section and this is reflected by the fact that they also run a number of youth sides. These teams look to provide young players from the local community with the opportunity to play the game in a safe and enjoyable environment whilst helping them to reach their full potential. It is important for any club looking to be successful over a sustained period of time to be able to produce their own talent, particularly in the current financial climate and this is an area they appear to have covered. It will certainly be exciting to see how their youngsters can progress. Stamford AFC is a fine example of a club playing an important role in their local community and this is thanks to all of the hard work that goes into making them a success. Hopefully they will be able to continue in the same manner for many years to come.
