Glenafton Athletic Glenafton Athletic FOLLOW US ONLINE TWITTER.COM/FOOTYFOCUSMAG Glenafton Athletic FOOTBALL CLUB Glenafton Athletic FC was first established in 1930 and made their move to their current home at Loch Park, Ayshire in 1960 when they also changed their colours from black and white to red and white. Over the years the club has put together a history of which they have every right to be proud. Their first team currently competes in the Super League Premier Division and enjoyed a campaign to remember last season as they won the league. They finished with a record of fourteen wins, four draws and four defeats from their twenty two matches to finish with forty six points. This was a terrific achievement for the club and was a just reward for all of the hard work that has gone into making them a success. They are not a team to rest on their laurels however and have been working hard during the off-season to makes sure that they can have another successful campaign. One of the highlights of the team’s performances last season was the attacking brand of football that they were able to produce. This was reflected by the fact that they found the back of the net thirty five teams at a rate of nearly two per game. This in turn has the potential to provide the club with a valuable source of additional revenue. So far this time around they have made a steady start to their campaign, having compiled a record of two wins, a draw and a defeat from their first four matches. This has left them sitting in the top half of the table with seven points on the board. This should provide them with a solid platform from which to go on and have a successful season. As long as they are able to keep their current group of players together they should be in with a good chance of mounting a serious championship challenge. Glenafton Athletic is not a club to focus solely upon their adult side however and this is reflected by the fact that they also have younger teams in place. These teams look to provide young players from the local area with an opportunity to play the game in a safe and enjoyable environment whilst helping them to reach their full potential. It is important for any club looking to be successful over a sustained period to be able to produce their own talent and this is an area they appear to have covered. It will certainly be exciting to see how their youngsters can progress over the coming years. There is much to admire about the fine set up that Glenafton Athletic FC currently has in place. If they continue in the same manner then they should be able to look forwards to a bright and successful for many years to come. Paul Kerr of club sponsor Kerr and Smith recently took the time to tell us more about their positive association with the club. Paul said, “We’ve sponsored the club for between five and ten years now. As a local business we’re keen to support the community and I’m a big fan of the club. They had a brilliant season last year and it was great to see their success. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish them the best of luck for the new campaign.” 62 Issue 74 Keeping our customers moving for 40 years 24/7 Breakdown & Recovery Service Simply call 01292 265566 Proud sponsors of Glenafton FC Accident Repair Centre: 01292 284888 50 green Street lane Ayr ka88be www.footballfocusmag.com 63
