The Club already has a children’s academy run by Joe Maxwell plus we have a link with the Matthew Le Tissier Academy whose players form our youth teams. One notable recent success with loaned youth players is to see Baily Cargill from the AFC Bournemouth academy reach the 1st Team squad for Bournemouth and come on as a substitute when they recently played Manchester United. The Club has a proud history and there have been several memorable occasions. Firstly we played in the 2007 FA Vase Cup Final against Truro at the new Wembley Stadium. As this was only the second competitive final at Wembley the FA decided to only charge a maximum of £10 for spectators which resulted in a crowd of 36,232 - a record to this day. The Club hired every available coach in the area and a convoy of 120 coaches took to the M3 Motorway emptying the town of Totton for the day. One special supporter on that day was Pete Chilcott a lifelong supporter of the Club since 1933 when his father took him to his first game at the old Testwood Park ground. Aged 90 Peter enjoyed the Wembley hospitality and this, together with being the first person through the turnstiles at the new Testwood Stadium were the highlights of his involvement over many years at the Club. Another highlight was the televised 2011 FA Cup 2nd round game at home to Bristol Rovers played in front of a capacity crowd. It was a real eye opener to see the amount of work that goes in to setting up for a televised game and the number of people involved. Although we lost heavily we did at least score a consolation goal which received the loudest cheer on the day. As to the future, the recently appointed Chairman Wayne Mew, who has taken over from Andy Straker who sadly had to resign on health grounds, and Vice Chairman Dave Penny want to further develop further footballing links with the community and there are plans to introduce a new 5-a-side league as well as Walking Football games on our all- weather multiple games area. The biggest challenge facing the Club is coping with the huge overheads of the new Stadium which with all its wonderful facilities comes at a massive cost. Ultimately we would like another shot at Conference South Football which we missed out on by losing the play off Final back in 2012. www.footballfocusmag.com 79
