Hassocks FC is a fine example of the important role that a club can
play in their local community. Football Focus Magazine recently
caught up with their Chairman Dave John to find out how the club
has been getting along lately.
Dave told us, “I’ve been involved with the club for
twenty-eight years now. I joined initially as a manager
and have been Chairman for three or four years now.
There is a lot of work for the committee here so we are
always on the lookout for people to get involved. We
find a lot of people dropout of the game now when they
finish playing so that can be a real challenge.
“We play in a league where some clubs pay a lot
of money and we don’t pay anything. We invest in
our facilities and they are top notch. We look after the
players but we’re not planning to pay any players and
our main focus is on long-term sustainability. That does
mean that some of our players move on when they are
offered more money elsewhere ands I don’t blame them
for that.
“That makes youth development for the club crucial
as we have to have players ready to step up. That is
what we’re quite good at as a club. Most years we’re
there or there abouts with our youth team and our first
