Newry City
ATHLETIC FOOTBALL CLUB
The first version of Newry City AFC was established in the Autumn of 1918 when
they were known as Newry Town and has gone on to put together a history of which
they have every right to be proud. They began life playing in the Newry and District
Football League and played their first League game on Saturday 2nd November 1918
against Newry United as World War 1 was coming to a close. Since then they have
gone on to put together a history of which they have every right to be proud.
At present, the club plays their home games at The
Showgrounds on Greenbank Industrial Estate and their
first team competed in the Danske Bank Premiership
League last season. They are led by Chairman Martin
Mcloughlin who is supported by Secretary Kevin Lyons
and the club is looking to progress under their guidance.
In the 2018/19 season it would be fair to say that their
first team did not perhaps put together the season they
would have liked as they compiled a record of six wins,
five draws and twenty-seven defeats from their thirty-
eight matches. This saw them finish bottom of the table
with twenty-three points on the board.
They will now be working hard to make sure that they
are able to do better next time around. As long as they
“We wish the club all the best, keep up the good
work on and off the pitch from the lads behind the
scenes to the guys on the pitch.”

are able to retain their current group of players and can
perhaps add some quality additions they should be well
set up to improve.
Newry City is not a club to focus solely upon their senior
section and this is reflected by the fact that they also run a
number of youth sides. These teams look to provide young
players from the local community with the opportunity to
play the game in a safe and enjoyable environment whilst
helping them to reach their full potential.
It is important for any club looking to be successful
over a sustained period of time to be able to produce their
own talent and this is an area they appear to have covered.
It will certainly be exciting to see how their youngsters can
progress over the coming years.
Newry City AFC’s disappointing season at first team
level should not take away from the good work being
carried out at the club. If they continue in the same manner
then it should only be a matter of time before results
improve on the field.
