Chertsey Town We managed three promotions and three cup wins during that period plus winning the Isthmian Team of the Year in 1993/4 season as a result of promotion, winning the League Cup, Divisional Cup and Charity Shield Winners as a Division 2 team beating Stevenage 5-0. With over 25 years of direct responsibility in non- league football the most challenging role is getting a balance between the cost of success against club income, whilst ensuring the club does not overspend. To achieve success a winning team is not enough as it has to go together with ground improvements that comply with the league a promotion takes you to. Roles in the club change and hardworking committees on which every non-league club survives needs to be headed by an executive management/board that can run the club as a business. Business support financially is a chicken and egg situation and has been proved this season throughout the journey of CTFC winning the FA Vase at Wembley on Sunday 19th May 2019. Sponsorship and advertising comes on the back of success and only when we reached the last eight did that source of income increase to levels that have had a financial effect on the club. The same goes for the fans coming to home games seeing 92 paying for our first pre-qualifying round that increased gradually up to when 1884 paying supporters were at Alwyns Lane for the semi-final second leg against Northwich Victoria. Followed up with over 6000 tickets for the final being sold through Chertsey. The mood at the club is something I have never experienced before and extends to the whole town and beyond. To be part of the most historic sporting achievement for Chertsey as a town has given enormous pride and to some extent disbelief of the national coverage. Hopefully a few hundred will be added to our gate next season with a League and Vase double it has been a superb season and but for a backlog of fixtures in the final eight weeks of the season we may have achieved other cup success. The team is doing brilliantly and playing a great fast flowing style of football. Congratulations for a fantastic season and thank you for the exciting times. I would personally like to thank the club for allowing my son Sidney to be the mascot in the FA Vase Final.” George Longman www.footballfocusmag.com 29
