Ashton
The club has put together a
history of which it has every
right to be proud since then
and was able to celebrate its
20th anniversary in 2014 with
a number of events through the
year including a dinner dance at
Ashton Gate Stadium.
This is not a club to rest on
its former success however and
is quickly becoming one of the
largest amateur clubs in Bristol
following on from its merger
with Backwell United to bring
them into the Ashton Football
Club Group.
One of the club’s standout
features is their superb youth
section. This part of the club
looks to provide young players
from the local community with a
safe and enjoyable environment
in which to play the game whilst
helping them to reach their full
potential.
It is important for any club
looking to be successful over
a sustained period of time to
be able to produce their own
talent, particularly in the current
financial climate and this is an
area they appear to have covered.
It will certainly be exciting to
see how their youngsters can
progress over the coming years.
The club is based in South
Bristol and runs teams from
U6s to U18s with Ashton Boys,
a resurrected Ashton Girls set
up and the adult side which is
known as Ashton & Backwell
United FC, providing more than
four hundred players a week
with the opportunity to play the
game.
Their U7’s, U8’s and U9’s
play non-competitive league
football in the Hanham Minor
League. The U11’s also play
league football in the Hanham
Minor League with the U12-U16
“This is the third season I have
sponsored the club; I currently
sponsor one girls team and two
boys teams as well as coaching
the U10s. Both my children play
for the club; my daughter Page
Ponsford and my son Archie
Ponsford.
Being a massive Bristol City fan,
I understand how much joy the
game can offer young people.
I thoroughly enjoy coaching
Ashton FC Boys and Girls. If we
all continue to stick together I
am confident we will have a
great future.”
Steve Ponsford, SMP Flooring
age groups playing in the Avon
Youth League.
Ashton & Backwell United run
two Somerset County Leagues
sides. The Colts play in The
Bristol Suburban League. The
Youth Team play in the Somerset
Floolight Youth League with the
U18’s Sunday side playing in the
Bristol South of the Bristol U18
Combination. The U21’s play
in the Bristol & Gloucestershie
League. Ashton Girls have two
league teams in the Bristol Girls
League. The U11’s and U12’s play
league football whilst U9s and
U10’s play development football
with the U10’s joining the league
for the 2018/2019 season.
There is clearly much to
admire about the fine set up
that Ashton FC currently has in
place and Football Focus Magazine
wishes them the best of luck for
the future.
