Landfills are not the solution...

Many people think the food they throw away decomposes in landfills and is not so bad for the environment. Well, they are wrong. After the leftovers are thrown into the garbage truck, the truck makes it's way over to the landfills. This is where majority of the food waste ends up. In a landfill, most organic materials decompose without any oxygen. This causes the foods and different organic materials to rot away while emitting methane into the atmosphere. Methane is made up of one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms. It is almost 23 times more dangerous than carbon dioxide and is extremely bad for the environment. The methane emissions from landfills alone account for 34 percent of all the methane emissions. These landfills also make up for 23 percent of all methane sources. Landfills are also really good for different types of diseases to develop. These diseases can seep through the soil and into lakes and rivers. Many of these diseases are deadly and can cause health problems like malaria, dysentery, cancer, hepatitis, and many others. The land around landfills cannot be used either. The land is far to contaminated to be used for agricultural purposes and the smell keeps people from building houses and different buildings.
