Safety concern of the
nanocomposites
Over the decades food packaging
application of nanomaterials to
enhance the functional properties
(mechanical, barrier etc.) of materials
has been a promising contender.
However, toxicity and ecotoxicity
are the major concern and persisting
problem. Theoretically, nanoparticles
have potential to migrate and leach
into the packed foods. In addition to
all of these technical aspects, there
is no regulation on nanotechnology
application on a global scale, mainly
because of lack of sufficient data in
regard to the safety assessment of
impregnated nanomaterials within
the packaging material. US Food and
Drug Administration and European
Commission have already taken up
research, case by case until more is
known about the toxicity, ecotoxicity,
and migration assay and risk
assessment.
With the extent of advantages,
antimicrobial properties and scope of
applications of nanomaterials in food,
‘nano’ sized materials impregnated
with natural, safe and bioactive
materials may offer advantages of safe
materials which could be successfully
utilized in the field of food-packaging.
