Manufacturers and retailers want more sustainable packaging

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING STUDY BY INVERTO Everybody wants sustainable packaging , but nobody knows exactly what it is . That ’ s because there ’ s no exact criteria for what it takes for packaging to be sustainable . However , according to a study by INVERTO , the Boston Consulting Group subsidiary specializing in procurement and supply chain management , sustainable packaging is very important today for half of all respondents to a survey about this topic . 86 % assume that the demand will continue to increase in the next years . Consumer wellbeing , a healthy society and fair business practices were defined as the most important sustainability goals by more than 50 % of the study participants .
CHALLENGES ON THE WAY TO SUSTAINABILITY IN PACKAGING High product complexity , limited material availability and limited capacity in procurement inhibit sustainable packaging solutions : only 23 % of those surveyed have sufficient capacity in procurement to drive new packaging projects . In addition , more than half of the respondents admit lacking an adequate market overview .
RELEVANCE & FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING When it comes to sustainability , it is important to keep an eye on new developments , as a lot of research is carried out on new materials and recycling options are constantly evolving . In addition to consumers , politicians are also exerting pressure : The requirements for material properties are increasing and quotas are being set for the use of recyclates .
Companies that want to switch to sustainable packaging or increase their share should first define focal points and gain an overview of the

Cost calculations should take into account not only material costs , but also additional expenses that arise , for example , from new machines or changes in production speed .
However , not only the cost side is important , emphasizes Thibault Lecat , Managing Director of INVERTO UK : “ Those who invest now will secure a true competitive advantage and significant brand enhancement . In addition , prices for conventional packaging will continue to rise due to the planned taxes , duties and other government regulations . So , in the long term , sustainability will pay off for both customers and manufacturers . “
