In the last decades of the 19th century, bedspreads with fashionable flower embroidery have become one of the most prominent parts of Estonian folk art. The novell embroidery style, called roosimiseks, originated in Lihula and its surrounding villages. (Mandel, Vaab: 2009) After Läänemaa, Lihula was also a part of Northern Pärnu and West Harjumaa, as well as Muhu. (Vunder: 1992) Lihula embroidery influenced Muhu's embroidery, as in the early 20th century unmarried young women from Muhu went to work in Lääne County and Pärnu and also got acquainted with local crafts.

Already at the end of the 19th century, the central part of Läänemaa becomes a red color for parishes. This so-called Lihula red had to be well bright, "the brighter, the better".
