Reading Comprehension Is More Than A Test Score: Implications for Assessment
and Interventions
Considerable state and federal funding has been directed toward improving reading comprehension. Despite this effort, many children continue to
preform below grade level in reading. The primary reason for this poor performance is that educators and researchers view reading comprehension as a single ability that can be changed with general instruction. A model will be presented that shows that reading comprehension is quite variable and involves the interaction of reader, text and task elements. Research supporting this model will be presented and the implications for assessment and instruction will be discussed. Dr. Catts is Professor and Director of the School of Communications Science and Disorders at Florida State University.
