Steelhead Trout
Habitat and Diet:
Steelhead are an "anadromous" type of rainbow trout. That is,
they spend most of their life in the ocean or in the Great Lakes
and return to rivers and streams to spawn. Steelhead are
capable of surviving in a wide range of temperature conditions.
Adult steelhead feed on insects, mollusks, crustaceans, fish
eggs, minnows, and other small fishes.
Relationship to humans:
Steelhead are great fighters and their meat is delicios no matter
how it is cooked. That combination that makes them one of the
most popular North American sport fish.
Fun/Unusual fact:
Most Steelhead don't necessarily die after spawning; they may
live to reproduce for as many as five successive years.
