Walleye Habitat and Diet: In spring and fall, walleyes live in shallower bay of the Great Lakes, where they seek out rocky areas. During the bright part of the day they retreat in schools to the shade of deeper waters. They prefer a water temperature of 55 to 68 degrees and are not usually found in waters deeper than 50 feet. Walleyes eat small bass, trout, pike, perch and sunfishes. They like to feed in the early morning and evening. Relationship to humans: These hard-fighting fish are exciting to catch, delicious to eat and because they feed actively all winter, they provide year- round fun for anglers. Fun/Unusual fact: The walleye is named for its cloudy eye which is caused by a reflective layer of pigment that helps them see and feed at night or in murky water. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the Thunder Bay Walleye Club for the walleye in our gallery.
