Perch
Habitat and Diet:
Perch travel in schools, and prefer shallow waters near shore.
They are rarely found in waters more than 30 feet deep,
although in spring and fall they inhabit shallower areas than
they do in the heat of the summer.
Adult perch love to eat insects, larger invertebrates (like
crayfish), and the eggs and young of other fish. Perch are food
for bass, walleye, northern pike and several kinds of birds, like
the cormorant.
Relationship to humans:
Perch are great fun to catch and travel in schools, so the fishing
action can be very exciting and a lot of fun. Their delicious,
mild meat make them a favorite of anglers and restaurants.
Fun/Unusual fact:
Yellow perch have the distinction of being the most frequently
caught game fish in Michigan.
