Brazil | Preserve the Amazon’ s Coastal Gem
Acres protected: 188,118 CO 2 equivalents safeguarded: 43 million metric tons
Current research suggests mangroves may safeguard as much as five times more carbon per acre than tropical forests. Mangroves also provide essential habitat for many coastal and oceanic species— manatees often birth and raise their calves in these waters, and young fishes of many species find shelter and safety from predators among the tangle of roots.
The vast mangrove forest along the coast of Brazil is no exception. Here, where the Amazon River meets the Atlantic Ocean, 9.5 million acres of mangroves support at least 40 threatened and endangered species, including the American Manatee, the Atlantic Goliath Grouper, and the Endangered Black Rail.
With the support of our RCAF donors, we and our partner— RARE Brazil— protected 188,118 acres of this mangrove and coastal habitat, safeguarding more than 43 million metric tons of CO 2 equivalents, which is equal to the annual electricity use of 8.9 million US homes.
When We Protect Our Forests, We Protect Us All
With help from our donors, the Rainforest Climate Action Fund( RCAF) has supported 41 projects around the world since 2021.
Combined, these projects have safeguarded more than 6 million acres, with an estimated 22.5 million acres in the process of being protected.
Once fully protected, these acres will safeguard more than 5.8 gigatons of CO 2 equivalents, which is equal to to the annual electricity use of more than 1.2 billion homes.
Overall, these projects are protecting 1,355 threatened and endangered species around the world.
These successes are possible only because of our past, present, and future RCAF donors. Learn more about RCAF and how you can become involved here: RainforestTrust. org / rcaf
