Once a Viking fishing village, Copenhagen is now a thriving modern city full of history and heritage. The capital of Denmark and a cultural hub of Scandinavia, it is known as the City of Spires for its majestic spires, turrets, and towers topping castles and churches, punctuating the skyline. A series of picturesque canals wind their way around the Nyhavn district by the harbor; some are lined with brightly painted 17th-century houses, one of the city’ s most iconic attractions that serve as the backdrop to millions of cheerful vacation photos. Copenhagen is a place of joy. For several years, the World Happiness Report has ranked Danes as the second-happiest people on the planet, just behind the Finns.
