Distance from downtown D.C.: 23 miles
Historic Herndon was first developed as a major rail stop in the
1850s. Its quaint downtown centers on the Herndon Depot, now a
museum and visitor’s center providing a detailed look at the town’s
past. It’s a good place to start a self-guided tour, and a short walk
leads to Lynn Street, Station Street, and Pine Street, all lined with
charming, historical architecture.
The town has an impressive mix of fine restaurants with global
influences. Anatolian Bistro is highly rated, with Turkish specialties
like lamb kebabs, Anatolian ravioli, and a baked shrimp stew. Be
sure to stop into Elden Street Tea Shop for as charming a cup of tea
as they come, plus weekly “TEAvents.”
A highlight in Herndon, Frying Pan Farm Park preserves mid-20th-
century farm life. Even in winter, it remains lively with events such
as the Bluegrass Barn concert series. The 1920s’ Hirschhorn carousel
is a favorite for families.
