Washington is chockablock with one-of-a-kind
shops that reflect not only the city’s essential
political nature, but its creative side, too, making
a dynamic combo that translates into some of the
best holiday shopping in the country. Shopping local
also takes you beyond landmarks and memorials
on the National Mall and into the city’s distinctive
neighborhoods. Pledge allegiance to holiday cheer
with these D.C.-inspired holiday gifts.
PRESIDENTIAL CHRISTMAS ORNAMENTS
The White House Visitor Center
Even if political talk is banned at your holiday table, that doesn’t mean
you can’t dangle a favorite president or two from the Christmas tree.
Since 1981, the White House Historical Association has issued an annual
ornament honoring a U.S. president. This year’s honoree is Dwight D.
Eisenhower, whose ornament is shaped like a military helicopter, as he
was the first president to regularly get around via whirlybird. Ornaments
from past years are available, as well ($18.95–$22.95).

GOURMET POPCORN
Stella’s PopKern
This non-GMO, preservative-free popcorn is always
fresh and available in colorful gift tins ($5.50–$63). It
comes in 20-plus flavors including standards like white
cheddar cheese and salty caramel, plus more exotic
twists like white French chocolate cookies and cream
and citrus habanero with lime fresco. Keep an eye
out for its bright yellow food truck or browse inside
Stella’s retail store in the Petworth neighborhood.
