MORNING: TIANANMEN SQUARE & THE FORBIDDEN CITY
As the home to 21.83 million people and the size of 20 New York Cities, Beijing is a huge, sprawling metropolis. Visiting some of the city’ s major sites in 24 hours requires careful planning. Fortunately, most of the main landmarks are located downtown. The easiest way to see the main sites is with a guided tour, which takes care of transportation and logistics for you.
Start early in the morning to avoid crowds at one of the world’ s largest public squares, Tiananmen Square, known for historic protests and political events. Notable monuments here include the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong, where you can see the embalmed body of the former Chinese Communist Party leader, and the Gate of Heavenly Peace, which separates the square from the Forbidden City. If you arrive early enough, be sure to watch the famous flag-raising ceremony that takes place daily at sunrise.
Just north of Tiananmen Square is the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Forbidden City. The red walls and golden roof of this imperial palace once housed 24 emperors from the Ming and Qing dynasties. It served as China’ s political and cultural center for 500 years. This micro-city features 90 palace compounds and 98 buildings, all surrounded by a moat. Focus on the major highlights to make the most of your limited time. Consider visiting the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the largest hall where major ceremonies, including imperial weddings, were held, and the Imperial Garden, which offers peaceful, landscaped greenery.
MIDDAY: TEMPLE OF HEAVEN & LOCAL LUNCH
After a few hours exploring the Forbidden City, visit the largest building for religious worship in China, the Temple of Heaven. Built in the first half of the 15th century, the impressive circular-roofed structure with three layers of eaves was where emperors prayed to heaven for good harvests. Take a moment to observe Beijing life in the nearby parks, where locals practice tai chi and play traditional instruments.
Take a break and enjoy lunch at a nearby restaurant. Consider trying Beijing specialties like Peking duck( which can be ordered in smaller, quicker servings), baozi( steamed buns), and noodles with soybean paste.
EVENING: GREAT WALL & HUTONG FOOD TOUR
If you have time, consider ending your sightseeing day at the famous Great Wall of China, located north of Beijing. The Mutianyu section is accessible enough for a quick visit. Take the cable car up to the top and enjoy the stunning views of the mountains and forests that surround the wall.
For dinner before you leave, go on a fun tuk-tuk food tour of Beijing’ s hutongs( alleyways). Explore hidden local spots and taste classic Beijing dishes while learning more about the city’ s culture and history.
