The country was founded over 1,000 years ago during the Viking Age , settled into and populated by a mix of Norse and Celtic ethnicities . Though the country has become more frequently visited and conventionally classified with mainstream Europe , it hangs onto its wealth of tradition and culture .
While its name suggests that Iceland ’ s climate is chilly , its temperatures vary based on the season . Summers reach an average temperature of between 10-13 ° C ( 50-55 ° F ) and experience bright daylight conditions that extend far into the evening hours . Winters , on the other hand , have an average temperature of around 0 ° C ( 32 ° F ) and amount to the country ’ s darkest period . Due to its long days and warmer temps , summer is often praised and considered to be Iceland ’ s prime visiting season . However , the country ’ s winter months offer enhanced views of and an unforgettable experience into the Northern Lights .
Luckily , soaking and swimming in hot and steamy lagoons is possible year-round in Iceland . As most springs hold an average temperature of around 36-40 ° C ( 97-104 ° F ) year-round , locals and visitors can take a plunge no matter the season . After a lengthy flight , head to what is perhaps the most acclaimed spring in Iceland , Blue Lagoon , to replenish . While this spring was manmade , it rings with natural essence and undeniable charm . The outdoor spa is located just outside of
Grindavík and offers day visits as well as overnight stays . Its eatery , Moss Restaurant , was applauded by the 2022 Michelin Guide for its flavorful reinventions of Icelandic cuisine .
Alternatively , head to Sky Lagoon , which is just minutes away from and outside of the country ’ s capital , Reykjavik ( which means Bay of Smokes ). Experience up-close views of the Atlantic coast while bathing in the geothermal pool that features a 230-foot ocean-view infinity edge . For a more intimate experience , head to Hrunalaug Hot Spring , located near Flúðir , constructed by stone walls in order to create a cozy habitat .
Perhaps one of Iceland ’ s most charming qualities is that lodging can take place in cabins , hotels or tents . Stay at Hotel Kría for its mountainous views or Frost and Fire Boutique Hotel for its prime location . Along the list is Hilton Reykjavík Nordica , which is recognized for its accommodating nature and helpful services , including airport shuttle services .
