SMITHSONIAN FOLKLIFE FESTIVAL June 29 – June 30 National Mall Our shared global humanity fuels this free annual festival that celebrates world cultures. In 2019, the “social power of music” sets the theme, starting with a concert on the first night of Smithsonian Folkways Recordings artists curated by the Grammy Award-nominated rapper Goldlink and rapper, producer, and spoken-word artist Ruby Ibarra. The following morning, celebrate the life and legacy of Pete Seeger, who would have turned 100 years old in 2019. CIRQUE DU SOLEIL PRESENTS: VOLTA July 26 – September 9 Tysons, Virginia Cirque du Soleil returns to the Washington, D.C. area with VOLTA, a captivating voyage of discovery! Inspired in part by the adventurous spirit that fuels the culture of street sports, VOLTA explores the themes of celebrating differences and unique qualities in a world where technology often isolates people from one another rather than freeing them. Written and directed by Bastien Alexandre, with Jean Guibert as the director of creation, VOLTA weaves acrobatics in a visually striking world driven by a stirring melodic score, composed by Anthony Gonzalez from the international electronic group M83. CITI OPEN July 27 – August 4 Rock Creek Park Tennis Center Tennis stars give each other backhand at this annual tournament, started in 1969. For more than a week, men and women compete in singles and doubles tournaments for $250,000 in prize money and a huge notch on their rackets, not to mention a crystal trophy. There’s plenty of action off the courts, too, including daily tailgates that bring beer, cocktails, tacos, BBQ, and more.
