For some,
Rockville,
Maryland might
ring a bell, thanks to the
R.E.M. song “(Don’t Go Back
to) Rockville,” a plea by singer
Mike Mills to his girlfriend not to return
to her hometown. But the flourishing
Washington, D.C., suburb has so much
more going for it than the song’s downbeat
lyrics imply. Located slightly less than 20
miles from downtown D.C., Rockville is the
seat of Montgomery County — one of the
most affluent and diverse counties in the
nation — and a major business and retail
