BEYOND BEER,
CHOCOLATE,
AND WAFFLES
BY DEBBIE EMERY
There’s no cooler place to visit this summer than
Brussels. Belgium’s capital city, which grew from a
small rural town into a major hub for international
politics after World War II, is now a cultural hot spot.
Beyond the beer, chocolate, and waffles that Belgium
is famous for, Brussels is home to 90 museums, green
parkland, trendy bars, fine dining restaurants, and some
of Europe’s best summer music festivals.
The brightest of these — dubbed the biggest musical
festival in the world — is Tomorrowland, an electronic
music festival taking place over two weekends, July
19–21 and 26–28, that launched in 2005. The Electronic
Dance Music extravaganza gets the small town of Boom
thumping and attracts up to 400,000 attendees every
year. Situated on the Rupel River, Boom is only 20 miles
from Brussels and easily accessible by car (via the E19
and A12 motorways), train, and shuttle.
