COPENHAGEN OPERA HOUSE
With a price tag of more than $ 500 million , the Copenhagen Opera House is one of the most expensive in the world . And it shows in the design . Opened in 2005 , the limestone-clad theater at the water ’ s edge is topped one of the largest canopy roofs structures in the world , as large as three soccer fields . The interior is even more remarkable , featuring Sicilian Perlatino marble and suspended balconies and staircases in the foyer , maple wood and a 24-carat gold leaf in the main auditorium , and artwork by Danish artists throughout , including four bronze reliefs by Per Kirkeby and three light sculptures by Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson .

LOUISIANA MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
RADISSON COLLECTION HOTEL
Locals still have mixed feelings about this 1960 hotel built by Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen for SAS airlines . Considered by many the world ’ s first design hotel , it manifested Jacobsen ’ s vision in every detail , from the furniture — including his signature egg , swan , and drop chairs — to the suspended spiral staircase , to the cutlery in the restaurant ( used in the film 2001 : A Space Odyssey ). A full two-year renovation , completed in April 2018 , has refreshed the scene , both modernizing and preserving the now iconic mid-century modernist style . Spaces have been opened , furniture reupholstered , timber screens added , and tall bronze-framed pivoting wall mirrors installed in the rooms to reflect the cityscape into the interior .
Twenty miles north of Copenhagen is one of the foremost contemporary art museums in the world . Opened in 1958 , The Louisiana ( named after the three wives — all named Louise — of the original land owner ) has served as the country ’ s main repository and supporter of contemporary art since . Exhibitions and collections are presented according to founder Knud W . Jensen ’ s “ sauna principle ,” which alternated “ hot ” and “ cold ” exhibitions — the first being established familiar artists and the latter unknowns and up-and-comers . The philosophy continues today , with six to eight major exhibitions . Although most of the work is international , the presentation and architecture is distinctly Danish and melds into the landscaped gardens .
