hat makes Denmark one of the “happiest
countries in the world?” It may be the hygge
— that “quality of coziness and comfortable
conviviality that engenders a feeling of
contentment or well-being,” as the Oxford
English Dictionary defines it. Pronounced “hoo-
guh, it plays a starring role in contemporary
Danish design and has caught a fire in recent
years, transforming Copenhagen into a global
capital of a rchitecture, furniture, fashion, crafts,
and cuisine, and its quaint cobbled streets and
lacey canals into a catwalk and laboratory for the
