WORLD PRIDE 2025: A HISTORIC CELEBRATION IN WASHINGTON, D. C.
This spring, Washington, D. C. will host World Pride 2025, a global celebration of LGBTQ + pride and culture, coinciding with the city’ s 50th anniversary of Pride festivities. From May 17 to June 8, this milestone event promises a vibrant array of activities to promote unity, activism, and cultural exchange. With an anticipated three million visitors from around the world, World Pride 2025 will spotlight D. C.’ s rich history as a center for civil rights and its thriving LGBTQ + community under the theme“ Fabric of Freedom.”
The festivities kick off with a high-energy Welcome Concert on May 31 at Nationals Park, headlined by global superstar Shakira as part of her Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran World Tour. This momentous event will be followed by a series of stellar events, including a Human Rights Conference from June 4 to June 6, which will bring together activists, scholars, and policymakers to discuss pressing issues facing the LGBTQ + community. Additionally, the Capital Pride Honors will be a globally livestreamed gala celebration honoring outstanding individuals, leaders, and activists in the National Capital Region who have furthered important causes for the LGBTQ + community.
This opening series of events sets the tone for a dynamic lineup of performances that blend celebration with protest, paying homage to Pride’ s roots. Another musical highlight is the World Pride Music Festival on June 6-7 at RFK Stadium, featuring Jennifer Lopez and Troye Sivan as headliners, along with Paris Hilton, Rita Ora, RuPaul, and British singing sensation Raye. Produced by Jake Resnicow, Club Glow, and Insomniac Events, this two-day event held across three stages will showcase genres from pop to techno, including drag and circuit performances, with additional artists yet to be announced.
On Saturday, June 7, the Capital Pride Parade will evolve into the World Pride Parade, culminating in the World Pride Street Festival and Concert, which will provide free access to hundreds of thousands of anticipated attendees. Expanding to two days this year, the concerts will showcase Wicked star Cynthia Erivo( June 7) and Grammy Award-winning rapper Doechii( June 8) in performances scheduled to occur on the Capitol Concert Stage in the heart of D. C. These iconic artists will be accompanied by a range of other performers, including Khalid, Brooke Eden, and 2AM Ricky, contributing to a diverse mix of hip-hop, R & B, and country-infused sounds.
Beyond the music, World Pride 2025 will showcase a wealth of cultural events. The World Pride Film Festival, in collaboration with the Queer Film Institute, will screen documentaries, narratives, and shorts from LGBTQ + filmmakers worldwide. The Gay Men’ s Chorus of Washington, D. C., will present daily pop-up performances as well as a major Pride Show on May 31 and June 1. The Capital Cup, a multi-day sports festival, will feature dodgeball, rugby, and the IGLA Swimming Championship, emphasizing the role of sports in promoting acceptance. The Rainbow History Project will present a large-scale exhibit at Freedom Plaza titled“ Pickets, Protests, and Parades:
The History of Gay Pride in Washington,” which will explore the origin story of local Pride activities and how the pickets and protests of the 1960s led to the parades and celebrations of the 2020s. Finally, the International March on Washington and Rally on June 8 will trace historic routes to the U. S. Capitol, culminating in a closing ceremony with performances, a montage of the week’ s events, and the symbolic passing of the World Pride torch to the next host city.
From electrifying performances and dance parties to engaging discussions and enriching cultural events, World Pride 2025 is sure to be a powerful platform for global love and acceptance. A historic event in a historic city, this landmark occasion promises not only to celebrate the history of LGBTQ + culture but also the rich and profound history of civil rights in our nation’ s capital.
