SHAKING HANDS WITH MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE BY ALICE LEVITT If you haven’t heard the name Manchester, New Hampshire in any other context, you at least know it from politics, particularly when presidential candidates arrive to shake hands and kiss babies in the important early primary state. However, there is a lot more to New Hampshire’s largest city than meets the political eye. For starters, those who want to spy an O’Keefe, Picasso, or Monet without big-city crowds can head post-haste to the Currier Museum of Art. The museum is also in charge of the Zimmerman House, a domicile designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1950 and the only Wright-designed home open to the public in New England. Even the mailbox has his inimitable stamp on it. Adam Sandler at Red Arrow Diner New Hampshire Also not-to-be-missed is The Red Arrow Diner, which has been serving all-day breakfasts since 1922. But the city is more than stick-to-your-ribs New England cuisine. The latest restaurants to open include Mexican- style street taqueria In-N-Out Burritos, Buba Noodle Bar, and a slew of sushi specialists. The region remains a bastion for beer. Hop on the Manchvegas Brew Bus for a tour of the area’s craft beer favorites including Backyard Brewery and To Share Brewing Company. Manchester’s proximity to the great New Hampshire outdoors is another plus. Hiking the nearby White Mountains is a must at any time of year. In winter, McIntyre Ski Area offers skiing in the northern part of town without leaving the confines of the city. Trails are on the easy and moderate side, but the Mammoth and the Quarry offers terrains for freestyling. GETTING THERE United Airlines flies nonstop from Washington Dulles Airport (IAD) to Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT). American Airlines flies nonstop from Reagan National Airport (DCA).
