HARMONIZING WITH NATURE
IN HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC
BY ALICE LEVITT
Want to escape the neon glow of tourism? Hilton Head Island,
South Carolina is the place. In fact, there isn’t a single neon sign
in the island’s entire 12-mile, foot-shaped length. It’s just part of
Hilton Head’s commitment to harmony with nature.
Hilton Head Island
There are no less than 12 public beaches to choose from, the
most popular being Coligny Beach, for its convivial atmosphere
and well-maintained common areas. The Tiki Hut serves cocktails
at the edge of the beach, and volleyballs fly. To escape crowds,
roll out a towel on Driessen Beach, a favorite among locals.
Hilton Head’s golf scene is another ace in the hole. Check into
Sea Pines Resort, home of Harbour Town Golf Links, a favorite
among PGA players for more than 50 years. The views of the
Calibogue Sound at the 18th hole will lull you into going with
the flow and not really worrying about your handicap. For those
who love water features, the newer Atlantic Dunes by Davis
Love III, also at Sea Pines, might be just the ticket.
More excited about scoring at the outlets? Several upscale
centers, including Tanger Outlets, offer designer styles from
brands like Ralph Lauren, Dana Buchman, and Coach. Overall,
there are more than 200 shops on the island, selling everything
from antiques to sporting goods.
But the best things about life on Hilton Head are free: From
salt marshes to magnolia trees, this is the place to commune
with the natural world.
